Why separate tickets matter
When one reservation is delayed and the next ticket is a separate contract, the second carrier may not be responsible for rebooking you. Travel insurance also may define eligible connections narrowly.
Read three policy sections
- Missed connection: which types of connection qualify?
- Travel delay: what waiting period and eligible expenses apply?
- Trip interruption: can additional transportation apply after a covered event?
Keep the complete itinerary
Save both tickets, scheduled connection time, carrier delay statement, replacement itinerary and receipts. The policy may require proof that the first delay caused the later loss.
Cruise and tour departures
Some policies specifically address missing a cruise or tour departure after a covered carrier delay. Read the exact definition rather than assuming every self-built flight connection qualifies.
Before booking a tight connection
This page does not recommend a specific connection time. Check airline, airport, border and baggage-transfer requirements and choose an itinerary that leaves an appropriate margin for your situation.
